Why proper care matters for luxury nightwear

Luxury sleepwear is not made the way fast fashion is made. Bocan's pieces are handcrafted in small quantities by skilled artisans in the family atelier in Bursa one of the world's historic textile centres, where the craft of fine fabric construction has been passed down through generations. The fabrics selected cupro, modal, rayon, viscose, silk chiffon, cotton and linen are chosen precisely because they feel extraordinary against the skin. That quality is not unconditional. Fine fibres respond to how they are treated.

Washing too hot, drying carelessly, or storing badly will not ruin a Bocan piece immediately, but it will age it prematurely flattening the drape, dulling the surface and shortening the life of the lace and finishing detail that gives each piece its character. The guidance here is not merely precautionary. It is how you protect an investment in craft.

Understanding Bocan's fabrics

Before choosing a care method, it helps to understand what your garment is made from. Bocan uses several distinct fabric categories, each with different properties and care requirements.

Silk is one of the world's most luxurious natural fibres, celebrated for its exceptional softness, elegant drape and subtle natural sheen. Lightweight, breathable and naturally temperature regulating, silk provides year-round comfort while feeling beautifully smooth against the skin. At Bocan Couture, silk is reserved for our most refined nightgowns, robes and bridal pieces, where timeless elegance meets exceptional craftsmanship. Although silk is naturally durable, its delicate fibres require thoughtful care. Always hand wash in cool water using a silk-specific detergent or opt for professional dry cleaning to preserve its softness, lustre and graceful drape for years to come.

Cupro is a semi-synthetic fibre derived from cotton linter the fine fibres that cling to cottonseeds after ginning. It is extraordinarily smooth, naturally breathable and possesses a lustrous drape that closely resembles silk. Cupro is used throughout Bocan's nightgown collection for its fluid fall and its exceptional softness against the skin. It is sensitive to heat and friction and should always be treated gently.

Rayon and viscose are closely related semi-synthetic fibres, both derived from wood pulp cellulose. They are prized for their silk-like drape, their natural breathability and their ability to carry colour beautifully. Rayon is the dominant fabric in Bocan's robe sets and silky nightdresses it has an elegant, weighted fall and a smooth finish that photographs exceptionally well. Viscose behaves similarly. Both fabrics lose structural integrity when wet and must never be wrung, twisted or machine-dried.

Modal is a refined form of viscose, produced from beech tree fibres using a more efficient process. It is softer than standard viscose, more resistant to pilling and retains its smoothness wash after wash. Where Bocan uses modal, it is typically in nightwear that requires both softness and durability over repeated wear.

Silk chiffon is one of the lightest and most delicate fabrics in the collection. Sheer, featherweight and translucent, it is used in our most fluid robe and nightgown styles, including several pieces from the bridal collection. Silk chiffon is produced from natural silk filaments and requires the most careful handling of all the fabrics we use.

Cotton brings breathability and natural durability to our nightgown and pyjama ranges. Bocan uses premium cotton and cotton voile in styles suited to warmer climates and everyday comfort. Linen is natural, textured and exceptionally durable. It breathes better than almost any other fabric in warm weather and softens with every wash. Bocan's linen nightwear is structured and refined it grows more beautiful with time when cared for correctly.

How to wash delicate nightgowns and nightwear

The single most important rule for washing luxury nightwear is this: cool water, always.

Heat is the enemy of fine fibres. It causes cupro and rayon to lose their drape, shrinks modal, degrades silk filaments and causes colours to bleed from cotton. Whether you wash by hand or by machine, cool water no warmer than 30°C is the foundation of every other care step.

Hand-washing is the safest method for all Bocan nightgowns, nightdresses and pyjamas and is strongly recommended for silk chiffon, lace-trimmed pieces and bridal nightwear.

To hand-wash a luxury nightgown:

Fill a basin or clean sink with cool water.
Add a small amount of detergent formulated for delicates look for pH-neutral, sulphate-free formulas. Do not use standard laundry liquid or biological detergents; the enzymes designed to lift stains will attack fine fibres.
Submerge the garment and move it gently through the water for no more than two minutes. Do not rub, scrub, or wring.
Rinse thoroughly in clean cool water until all detergent is removed.
To remove excess water, lay the garment flat on a clean dry towel and roll the towel loosely. Press gently never twist.

Machine-washing is suitable for cotton nightgowns, cotton pyjamas and linen styles and for cupro, rayon and modal garments where the label permits it. Always use:

The delicate or hand-wash cycle
Cool water (30°C maximum)
A mesh laundry bag this prevents the garment from snagging on other items and protects lace trim
A delicate detergent

Never wash silk chiffon, heavily lace-trimmed pieces, or bridal nightwear in a machine.

A special note on our lace. Lace is among the most delicate elements of any Bocan piece and it deserves a little extra tenderness. While some lighter lace trims can tolerate a gentle cold wash no warmer than 30°C, we always recommend keeping our heavier lace designs out of the washing machine. The movement of a machine cycle can catch and weaken intricate lacework and as much as we would love to promise otherwise, we simply cannot guarantee that delicate lace will come through unharmed. For these pieces, a cool hand-wash is always the safest choice and the one that keeps your lace beautiful for the longest.

Caring for cupro, rayon, modal and viscose fabrics

These silky-feel fabrics share a common characteristic: they weaken significantly when wet. A dry cupro or rayon nightdress has excellent tensile strength. The same piece, soaking in water, is far more vulnerable to stretching and distortion.

This means:

Never lift a wet rayon or viscose garment by a single point support the full weight as you handle it out of the water.
Never wring. The twisting motion stretches fibres permanently and can distort the cut of the garment.
Never tumble dry. Heat collapses the structure of rayon and cupro irreversibly.
Avoid soaking for long periods. A two-minute gentle wash and a thorough rinse is sufficient.
If a stain requires pre-treatment, dab gently with cool water and a small amount of delicate detergent. Test on an inconspicuous area first.

How to care for cotton nightgowns and pyjamas

Cotton is the most resilient fabric in the Bocan collection and the most forgiving to care for. Premium cotton nightgowns and women's pyjamas can generally be machine-washed on a cool gentle cycle without concern.

A few refinements worth adopting:

Wash darks and lights separately. Cotton holds dye well, but new pieces may run slightly in the first few washes.
Turn the garment inside out before washing. This protects any surface embellishment and preserves the appearance of the outer fabric.
Use a gentle, fragrance-free detergent where possible particularly for pieces worn by pregnant or postpartum women. Our maternity nightwear is made with sensitive skin in mind; the detergent should be too.
For cotton styles with lace trim, a mesh laundry bag remains advisable even in a gentle cycle.
Air dry where possible. Cotton can be tumble-dried on a low setting, but air drying produces a better result and extends the life of any lace or trim detail.

How to care for silk chiffon garments

Silk chiffon demands the greatest care of all Bocan fabrics and rewards that care with unmatched longevity. The fine natural silk filaments that give chiffon its translucent, featherweight quality are also its vulnerability. Heat, agitation and harsh chemicals all cause irreversible damage.

Always hand-wash silk chiffon. Machine washing, even on a delicate cycle, introduces too much mechanical friction for such a fine weave.

Use cool water never warm.
Use a detergent specifically designed for silk. Some prefer a tiny drop of gentle, pH-neutral liquid dissolved fully in the water before the garment enters.
Submerge the garment and swirl gently for 60 to 90 seconds. Do not rub any area against itself.
Rinse in two changes of cool water.
To remove water, lay flat on a towel and roll without pressing. Unroll immediately and reshape.
Never hang a wet chiffon garment the weight of the water will stretch the fabric permanently.
Dry flat, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Drying and ironing best practices

Drying

The principle for drying all Bocan luxury nightwear is consistent: air dry, flat or gently hung, away from direct heat and sunlight.

Never tumble dry cupro, rayon, modal, viscose, or silk chiffon. The combination of heat and mechanical movement will cause irreversible shrinkage and drape loss.
Cotton and linen can be tumble-dried on a low setting if necessary, but air drying preserves their finish and extends the life of any lace trim.
For silky nightdresses and nightgowns, hang to dry on a smooth padded hanger once most of the water has been removed by rolling. Avoid wire hangers, which leave marks.
Keep all luxury nightwear out of direct sunlight during drying UV exposure causes colours to fade and can degrade fine fibres over time.

Ironing

Most Bocan garments require very little ironing if dried correctly laying flat or hanging while still slightly damp and allowing to air dry fully will naturally release most creases.

When ironing is needed:

Use a cool iron on the reverse of the fabric.
For cupro, rayon, modal and viscose: a low-heat setting, inside out, with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Never iron directly on the outer surface of these fabrics.
For silk chiffon: use a silk setting (or the coolest setting your iron offers). Iron on the reverse only, with a thin pressing cloth. Avoid steam the moisture can leave marks on fine silk weaves.
For cotton: a medium-heat iron is suitable. For cotton voile styles with lace detail, still use the reverse and a pressing cloth near any trim.
For linen: a medium-warm iron, on the reverse, with light steam will smooth linen beautifully. Linen responds well to ironing while slightly damp.

Storing luxury nightwear correctly

How a garment is stored between wearings matters as much as how it is washed. Fine fabrics are susceptible to light, moisture, compression and chemical transfer from incorrect storage environments.

General principles for all Bocan nightwear:

Store clean. Never store a worn garment before washing body oils, perfume residue and perspiration left in fabric will degrade fibres over time and attract moths to natural materials.
Store in a cool, dry, dark space. Light fades colour; humidity encourages mildew; excess warmth degrades fine fibres.
Avoid plastic garment bags for long-term storage. Plastic traps moisture and restricts airflow. Use cotton or muslin garment bags instead, particularly for silk chiffon and lace-trimmed pieces.
Cedar blocks or lavender sachets placed near (not touching) stored garments will deter moths from natural fibres without the chemical contamination of mothballs.

For silky nightgowns and nightdresses:
Fold loosely or hang on a padded hanger. If folding, avoid sharp creases place a layer of acid-free tissue along fold lines to prevent permanent marking.

For robes:
Hang on a broad padded hanger to maintain the shoulder shape. Store away from other garments that might cause friction against the fabric surface.

For bridal nightwear:
Bridal nightgowns and robe sets intended for a special occasion should be stored flat in an acid-free box with tissue paper between layers if they will not be worn imminently. This is the same principle used for storing fine bridal gowns and ensures the fabric arrives at the occasion in perfect condition. How to extend the life of your favourite nightgown

The Bocan approach to sustainability is rooted in longevity pieces made in small quantities by hand, from carefully sourced fabrics, designed to be worn and loved for years rather than seasons. The care practices above are themselves an act of extending that life. A few additional habits make a meaningful difference.

Rotate your nightwear. Wearing the same garment every night accelerates wear and reduces recovery time between uses. If you have more than one Bocan piece, wear them in rotation.

Wear with intention. Applying body lotion, perfume, or skincare directly to a garment particularly to silk chiffon and lace causes localised degradation over time. Allow skincare to absorb fully before dressing. Apply perfume to pulse points that are not in direct contact with the fabric, or apply before dressing.

Address stains immediately. A fresh stain is always easier to treat than a set one. Blot never rub with a clean damp cloth. If specialist treatment is needed, consult a dry cleaner experienced with fine textiles before attempting anything at home.

Respect the repair. Bocan is available to adjust, adapt and alter pieces. If a seam needs attention, a strap has loosened, or lace detailing requires repair, reach out to the atelier before the damage progresses. Our made-to-measure service extends to alterations and repairs on existing pieces.

Consider each season. Pieces you will not wear for several months should be freshly washed, stored correctly in breathable bags and checked at the start of each season. This takes twenty minutes and can add years to the life of a piece.
